You may know that iodine is not only a raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, but also regulates the growth and secretion of the thyroid gland. If there is a lack of iodine, there will be iodine deficiency disease commonly known as "rough neck disease", which is simply a significant swelling of the neck. If a woman lacks iodine during pregnancy, it will cause developmental disorders of the baby's nerves and body, resulting in short body and stupid mind, that is, "cretinism", also known as "cretinism".

It is often mistakenly believed that whether it is hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, you should eat more high-iodine foods such as kelp, resulting in excessive iodine intake, which may also cause diseases such as "hyperthyroidism", "hypothyroidism", "thyroiditis" and "goiter".

Common thyroid diseases, according to iodine supplementation, can be divided into three categories: need for iodine supplementation, no need for iodine supplementation and need for iodine prohibition.

1. People with thyroid diseases who need iodine supplementation

The above-mentioned neck is obviously enlarged, but the thyroid function is low people need iodine supplementation. If iodine supplementation is large, it may also affect the results of some recent tests and delay diagnosis and treatment.

2. People with thyroid diseases who do not need iodine supplementation

For example, people with thyroid diseases such as goiter (nodules), thyroiditis, and primary hypothyroidism do not need to supplement a large amount of iodine. Because supplementation with iodine tablets or fasting iodine-containing foods has little effect on treatment, such diseases generally need to be treated with drugs or surgery. If antibodies on thyroid function tests are elevated, iodine intake restriction is generally required.

3. People with thyroid diseases who need to ban iodine

In hyperthyroidism and the synthesis of hormones, avoid the synthesis of excessive thyroid hormones by limiting the intake of raw material iodine. However, iodine is not the cause of hyperthyroidism, so after hyperthyroidism is controlled, iodine-containing foods can be eaten appropriately. The prohibition of iodine here mainly refers to not eating iodine-containing drugs or foods rich in iodine, such as marine plants such as kelp and seaweed, western medicines such as amiodarone and iodine lozenges or traditional Chinese medicines containing seaweed, kelp, oysters, etc.

With regard to the amount of iodine consumed, the World Health Organization's dietary recommendation is that the average daily iodine intake should be 150 micrograms for healthy adults and 250 micrograms for pregnant and lactating women.
