Recognizing these "iodines", thyroid patients do not need to "talk about iodine discoloration"

release time:2023-08-22|reading:

Iodine is an indispensable trace element in the human body, and insufficient or excessive iodine intake may adversely affect the thyroid gland and even lead to thyroid lesions.

Iodine intake should be appropriately taken according to individual conditions to prevent and treat related diseases. Patients with thyroid disease do not need to "talk about iodine discoloration", and should go to a regular endocrinologist in time to carry out reasonable treatment and avoid misdiagnosis, mistreatment or overtreatment.

The source of human iodine is mainly provided by food, accounting for 80% to 90% of the daily iodine intake. Iodine is metabolized daily in the body, and in the case of stopping iodine intake, the body's iodine reserves are only enough to last for two or three months. The ideal iodine intake for adults is about 150 micrograms per day, 200 micrograms for pregnant and lactating women, and children have a corresponding reduction in iodine intake. The vast majority of patients with thyroid disease can consume iodized salt normally during treatment, and try to avoid insufficient or excessive iodine intake. Patients should also not be overly anxious and should maintain a healthy state of mind. Clinically, many patients are confused about whether they need a special iodine diet. In fact, different thyroid diseases have different causes and require different iodine diets.

If you have hyperthyroidism, limit iodine intake and avoid iodine-rich foods and medications if possible. In hypothyroidism, it depends on the situation. For hypothyroidism caused by complete resection or complete destruction of the thyroid gland, consumption of iodized salt or uniodized salt has no obvious effect on the thyroid gland; For hypothyroidism caused by thyroid gland lobe resection or residual thyroid tissue, iodine diet can be normal; hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency, which requires an appropriate increase in iodine intake; Hypothyroidism due to iodine excess is mild, and the cause of iodine excess needs to be sought and iodine intake restricted.

There is currently no evidence that increased iodine intake is associated with the incidence of thyroid cancer, which generally allows a normal iodine diet. Excessive or insufficient iodine intake can increase the prevalence of thyroid nodules, so an iodine diet should be appropriate. In patients with thyroid nodules with autonomic function and hyperthyroidism, iodine intake should be restricted.
