Antimicrobials are not a panacea

release time:2023-06-03|reading:

Antimicrobials (often referred to as "anti-inflammatories" and "antibiotics") are a valuable resource for humanity.

The protection of antimicrobials and the containment of bacterial resistance are closely related to all people.

At present, the use of antibiotics is common, numerous, long-term, and non-standardized, resulting in a huge waste of drug resources.

We need to slow the development and spread of resistance so that existing antimicrobials can be used in healthcare for as long as possible.

What are antimicrobials?

Antibacterial drugs are used to treat infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, mycoplasma, chlamydia, rickettsia, spirochetes, etc., and should not be purchased arbitrarily, but should be used reasonably according to the doctor's prescription.

Can you use antibacterial drugs for the common cold?

The common cold is a relatively common upper respiratory tract infection that can be caused by respiratory viruses such as rhinovirus and coronavirus, manifested as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, pharyngeal discomfort, cough, and systemic symptoms such as chills and low-grade fever.

The development of antibacterial treatment drugs can not change the course and prognosis of our cold, the common cold does not need to be routinely managed to use antibacterial active drugs, should not eat antibacterial drugs casually as soon as a cold, blind use may also affect the increasing resistance of some bacteria.

The abuse of antimicrobials leads to drug resistance, the emergence of superbugs.

When antibiotics are used as anti-inflammatory drugs and cold medicines, they are not only ineffective, but also produce more powerful bacteria.

Because in the process of using antibiotics to kill bacteria, bacteria "resist" in order to survive, gradually changing themselves and becoming stronger.

This makes it difficult for general antimicrobials (even the highest levels) to kill them.

Do not drink alcohol while taking antibacterial drugs

The "disulfiram reaction" is caused by the interaction between cephalosporins and alcohol, because these drugs bind to acetaldehyde dehydrogenase in the body, inhibit the activity of enzymes, thereby affecting ethanol metabolism in the body, allowing acetaldehyde to accumulate in the body, causing dizziness, headache, palpitation, chest tightness, nausea, difficulty breathing and other uncomfortable symptoms.

In addition, metronidazole and tinidazole can also inhibit alcohol metabolism, and drinking alcohol while taking it can produce a similar reaction.

Therefore, alcohol should not be consumed for at least 7 days while taking these drugs and when discontinuing them.

Do not inject at will, if you can take it orally, do not inject

Intravenous administration can make the drug directly enter the human blood circulation and can quickly exert its effect.

It is suitable for the treatment of moderate to severe infections, and oral antibiotics are often the first choice for mild infections.

Intravenous fluids themselves can bring some adverse effects, such as fever, phlebitis, air embolism, vascular damage, etc.

The rational drug use principle determined by the World Health Organization is: if it can be taken orally, it will not be injected intramuscularly, and if it can be injected intramuscularly, it will not be injected intravenously.
